I hate to see all this happen. I really wasn’t aware of a lot of these developments, but that’s really not any of my business. I’ve been a TSA SATERN member for 5 years now and will remain with the new Salvation Army Net, but that’s just me. I hope everyone else finds their niche somewhere. Peace. K5XQ

This is an unfortunate state of affairs, but like some of the others, I think the SA representatives, mishandled the whole thing. I have distanced myself from TSA for other reasons, mainly logistical, there is no point for me to be associated with an organization that operates about 250 miles away. The other day while listening to the used to be net, it was mentioned that there could be an HF ARES net, and it would be nice if that happened, and with the same people.

To say I am deeply saddened by this turn of events is a huge understatement.  I have looked forward to participating in the net whenever possible, and you have personally done an outstanding job of serving in a way that any and all of us should emulate when we serve our local and regional organizations, whether they be TSA, ARES, Red Cross or whatever.

Your reports of harassment at the hands of "self-proclaimed Christians" chills me to the bone.  Yes, I consider myself to be a Christian as are many of my friends and volunteer associates both within the church and within the Salvation Army.  They would, to a person, feel the same.  It's wrong on so many levels and totally contrary to Jesus' teachings.  Trust me, this is not the Christian way.

I wish you well, and hope to connect in the future.  If I may ever be of use to you, please don't hesitate to ask.

Your Friend in Chicagoland ...

Lee, I wasn’t surprised to get your “pulling the plug” mail.  I knew it might just be a short time and it was.  Unfortunately, for us newcomers, this has been so disappointing, to say the least.

One big issue ongoing is that you have been greatly harmed in your reputation by all of this.  Since none of us have access to most of the comms between you and the TSA, we get only your side of the story.  And it is grim indeed.  That they could be so vitriolic and condemning and threatening shocks me greatly.  All my associations with TSA folks had been so positive until so recently.  But yours were quite otherwise it is clear.  Well, that will it seems end now with your withdrawal.

I do not want to loose connection with you though.  I will give you a call on the Hotline which I presume will continue working.  It will be several weeks though do to vacation coming up tomorrow and some other matters that need to be addressed.

I must say though that as a Christian I can say that the behavior you have reported of others who name the name of Christ is abhorrent.  I cannot really apologize for them, but I can say that in Christ we are not at all in our hearts like so many who have mistreated you seem to be.  The words and actions come from the heart and Christians (if they really are “Christians” after all) should at least manifest Christ’s love for sinners and not what they have manifested toward you.

We are all sinners and descendants of Adam and Eve.  But redemption is available if only one would by faith receive it.  So, in short, being a Christian is a matter of the heart and not a matter of living a certain kind of life.  The TSA often down through the years seemed to me to be putting the emphasis on the living part and not on the being part and also tended to be quite judgmental towards others of different persuasions.  I have not become a TSA member for that reason and also due to some differences with their official “statement of faith”.

Well, enough of this.  Let’s talk when we can.  Again, I am so saddened at what has happened.  Your great work over these months is so commendable and was so very needed.  May your EMCOMMS work continue unabated and be a blessing to many.

Every blessing, Lee,

\Jim

Sorry it came to this, and shame upon the “Christians” at TSA.  I’ve been a supporter of TSA for many years; I can’t believe the way they are acting.  No doubt, I am a fellow “rebel”, so as guilty as you are.

I personally thought you were doing a great job managing the Net they apparently abandoned.

I came to the SATERN Net relatively recently, became active in Hurricane Maria aftermath.

I still believe in the value of Amateur Radio in EMCOMM.  Sure, it’s way down the list nowadays, but when TSHTF, we can still function.  Our redundancy is broader than any Public Service!

To you, Ned, Bob, Warren, Harry, and all the others, I hope to see you on the air in the future, however it may come about.

Thanks for your work Lee.  I appreciate it.  Mark, KM4RK

So sorry to read the email report on your association with TSA. Hams are in the business of helping in the time of an emergency. As Christians, we will pray for all involved. We will also pray that you come to understand John 3:16.  The tongue is a mighty force and words spoken in anger can never be retrieved. We will be watching for your new Ham Radio net announcement. Love in Christ Jesus, Chuck and Bev

Lee,

I understand why you separated from TSA.

I think that they became aware of the nation attention that you obtained for what became of Satern20M Net without TSA.  Just call it “The Satern 20Meters Net".

You were the foundation of what the SATERN 20M net became.  We still need your leadership.  We have a tropical storm building in the gulf today.  Most likely not going to be a major storm.  The person that is calling for help, it is a major problem.  You were building multiple means of communicating.  We could become a major center point modern messaging of emergence communications.

We can continue and build a staff that will put forward training.  Such as

formal message traffic and not just weather reports.  Being a relay station.  Being a net controller.  Proper entries in Net Logger, witch you have a fine video of.

Use of the Hamshack Hotline bridge and equipment acquisition of equipment.

Most of this could be on air, as we could never get all to meet at one place face to face.

Please come back and show those daughters that you know what you are doing!  Dump their emails in to SPAM!

Sorry to hear of this.  I think 2 nets should be ok and I would be happy to check in to both once I get my remote station set up in my office.  I know I have checked in to both in the past when I happened to be in my truck and had hf equipment.  Anything that makes ham radio more enjoyable and a better radio service is ok with me.  But I am only a single voice among many and I have been licensed just short of 50 years.  wb5oxq.  I fail to understand why there should be a problem.

Wow Lee, so disheartening to see this happen, especially in light of all you have given. But totally understandable given the circumstances.

Having served on a number of mission groups/teams, doing actual, on-the-ground disaster relief work (in New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy; Houston, Hurricane Harvey, California, Paradise fire; etc.), and I know how occasionally there are those who want to be the "controllers", and it often (always?) leads to somewhat diminished enthusiasm by those who are there just to do the work.  I admire your moxie, and for really trying to keep the group together as you did.  But, in the famous words of Harry Callahan: "A man's got to know his limitations", and when it's time to just move on...

Please keep my info, if you're ever in need of anything, I'll be there (to the extent I can, anyway!).  And of course, I'll stay subscribed to this "Groups.io" group to stay informed.

73, and all the best to you and your family,

HI Lee,

I am sorry it came to this. A lot of us were excited for the future of SATERN. I appreciate you and the rest of the NCS Team.  I will miss you all.

Unfortunately, there are people in many organizations that call themselves Christians. Some of them are just Christian in name only. They are not Biblical Christians which are real Christians.  They have some twisted theology.

People like,  'Major Bob, KA0VZP', give Christianity a bad name.  He should be on his knees seeking God’s forgiveness. A real Christian will display fruits of the spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Take care,

Rob – KG4OPX

Major this, Sargent that, Corporal, this... All telling me I and my entire sphere of existence are rebels, heathens and are going straight to Hell for what I have done to the Salvation Army.
All I tried to do is preserve Major Pat's Legacy and strive to make a happy home for the many people who counted on the daily SATERN net for comfort and succor, while still upholding the mission of helping out the Public in times of need.
While many of you, especially the NCS team and Ned, Kirk, etc. have been wholeheartedly supportive of this effort, the time has come for me to pull the plug.
The 'new' Salvation Army SATERN net on 14.325 is recognized by the ARRL as a viable and endorsed Net. Bill, WB5ALM and Weather Bob, WX8BOB and his group have decided to restart the Net using all the ideas I proposed in the beginning, yet met with resistance from TSA. I am not a Christian. I never signed up to be a Missionary for Christ or TSA. I just accepted an offer to manage an emergency service net.
I dedicated 20+ hours each week to being Net Manager and was met with nothing but resistance and criticism from the Army and their minions. I spent my own hard-earned funds to setup websites and the email reflector, all in the hopes of improving and expanding the capabilities of our Net, with no expectation of recompense or praise, and all it has done is bring a shitstorm of criticism and scorn upon me and my loved ones, as well as wreaked havoc upon my reputation in Ham Radio and my 40 year legacy of experience helping others selflessly. But this ARRL article, while being a fair representation of what happened, does not fully give credence to the facts and those folks out there who choose to drink the TSA cool-aid without knowing the whole story and history have, once again, chosen to dedicate themselves to denigrating and insulting me and the rest of us for 'destroying' the SATERN net and 'the way it is supposed to be'.

Re: We made the ARRL News...

Jim James (KG5BIM)

I am sorry to hear all the BS you have been going through Lee. I think I might have a solution to this mess let the NC continue for this week just two more days. Monday we will hold the frequency of 14.265 and we can change the name to a ARES 20 meter emergency net. Ares is already recognized by the Red Cross and of course the ARRL along with Fema and others. It is strange to me that the SA abandoned our net and just left us in limbo and now want it back. I worked countless hours on several major hurricanes and never once heard anyone from the SA on the air and giving us any assistance. I remember we tried to get the SA headquarters to open up a call center for Hurricane Maria so they could call the family members with one of their counselors. That was shot down so we had to make calls ourselves. So all is not lost Lee you are doing a great job and we can go in another direction. I know why they did this to you I listened to the net when I got home Wednesday morning on 14.325 it lasted about 30 minutes with very few stations checking in. So Lee I think the whole group will be with you are whoever to get this resolved for good. Let me know what you think Lee. Thank you again Jim KG5BIM

Re: We made the ARRL News...

Lee,

I am a short timer to the net but I have enjoyed it immensely! Working to assist folks last summer with so many hurricanes was a humbling experience.
The folks that have frequented the net since I got involved last summer are just awesome amateur operators.
I hate to see this group vanish. I would be involved if this group decides to reinvent ourselves with perhaps a different focus or mission.
I just hate the thought of not communicating with you and Ned, Warren, Steven and all of the rest of the net members.
Thank you for all you did and I am sorry that so many have treated you badly.
Please keep me in the loop if a new net is possible in the future.
73,

Paul

Re: We made the ARRL News...

NL7WA John

Wow, spent 33 years in the military and was off the radio's since 1997. I thought
getting back into ham radio would be fun, refreshing and a way to explore all the
ways I have missed over the years. But now, this stuff, Lee sorry for the ways
"those" folks crapped all over you.
You don't need that kind of garbage in your life, move on and thanks for what
you did and tried to do.
My feelings about the TSA folks had definitely changed!

(Wahhhhhh)
I know I sound like a crybaby. I am from NY and have a tough skin. I have zero tolerance for BS and Politics and believe wholeheartedly that EVERYONE deserves a fair shake when it comes to disasters. I have done my best, honestly, to achieve that for SATERN.
I thought we had put the past behind us and were moving in a new and positive direction. We have been working on a new Web presence as well as MOU's with served agencies such as SHARES, Red Cross, ARES, etc. where we could make a REAL difference as Radio Amateurs in crisis situations.
I am very much involved in EMCOMM, both in the Amateur as well as the Professional world. The Pro's consider TSA and SATERN to be a joke. Never to be called upon. A bunch of old Men possessed of self-importance thinking they know it all and wanting to take over. Old-School Hams are deluding themselves in this era of infrastructure redundancy, Digital Comms, and new and emerging technology, and sad as it is to say, once they die out, with their mindset of 'we don't need any of this new crap, all we need is our CW', there will be ZERO young guns to take over, since the existing cadre has driven them away and turned them off. I see this every day in ARES and my local Club.
If I have learned anything in the last 2 years, it is that life is WAYYYY too short and the Glory of our existence can be wiped out at a moments notice. If TSA wishes to rule the roost and be the BMOC (Big Man On Campus), spreading the Gospel through Ham Radio, so be it. They can have it.
I, for one, have many other 'based in reality' secular organizations to devote my time and effort to, without having to deal with daily threats to my Family and myself.
As of Tomorrow, 6/17/2021, I am officially shutting down my involvement with SATERN. I am sorry we could not do more for all of you, but as the victims of the Spanish Inquisition realized, you just can't compete with religious zealots.
I want to thank Ned, KL7QK, Kirk N5XJB, Harry W0HMS, Warren, WX8OH and Bob, WA5EEZ, as well as the MANY relays and Friends who have selflessly given of themselves to this net.
Special thanks to Ken Standard, AG6SV for his dedication to SATERN S. Terr & Digi 20m, as well as his continued support & guidance.
Sorry, guys. I love you all, I just cannot do this anymore and suffer this abuse from people who are supposedly in the service of Our Lord.
I wish you and yours all my best, from myself and Nicole. May God Bless you all and hope you all stay in touch. (those of you who aren't haters, anyway) HIHI

PS: The NetLogger database will continue to be hosted on my servers in perpetuity, should it be needed. The e-mail reflector will continue until the subscription expires next year.

Oh, and, not to be petty, but a special note to 'Major Bob, KA0VZP'- F.-U.. You are an uninformed, hateful Ass. You should be ashamed of yourself. You want to quote scripture to ME, let me quote some to YOU: "Judge NOT, lest ye be judged" Threaten me and mine with damnation??? How DARE you, you POS.

They fairly reported the facts. I give them credit.
