While I appreciate the prose of the quote, I am not quite clear on how that applies to the 'explosion' of posts.
Nothing that has been stated is incorrect about what occurred. Earlier today I posted a question on the stern groups.io page New topic regarding todays 20 meter net whether we were having one & if so when & where. I haven't received an email showing my post and or any replies to my post. 73 Anthony R Paolucci Jr KG5JPU (817)707-6008 On Wed, Apr 21, 2021, 10:44 WA5LEE - Lee - Net Manager via groups.io <leemanpa=me.com@groups.io> wrote: While I appreciate the prose of the quote, I am not quite clear on how that applies to the 'explosion' of posts. |

Hey Anthony! I sent you a direct message response to your question. Sorry if you did not get it.
The 20M daily net is continuing exactly as it has been. Matter of fact, we are just closing it now as I type this. The only change will likely be a different reverse-acronym for SATERN with no affiliation to any group other than ourselves. -- '73 (Best Wishes, for non-Hams) --... ...-- / -.. . / .-- .- ..... .-.. . . Hello all from the deep south!
Well the truth has finally come out. - the SATERN International SSB 20 meter net has no "mission" and never really has. TSA mission is basically local.and really has few needs for international communnications support. Glad to see some support for continuation of a daily international net - but given the state of internation communications - have strong doubts that emergency com alone will give one a sustainable level of interest and mission. Developing a workable mission is imho critical to the net's successful continuation. I would be interested in contributing to such an effort. -anyone else feel the same???? |

Noel <drnat@...>
Hi, Lee. Perhaps you've not seen them, but I've received multiple notifications of permanent cancellations of nets -- every single net on the satern.org list. Yet, as you know, yesterday's 20 meter SSB net occurred as always. That's my reference point for posting, "Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see."
While I'm typing, I see zero reason to change the words behind the SATERN acronym. My 2 cents worth... --Noel N9CJT |
|
The reason you saw those multiple cancellations was, since the groups.io email reflector is no longer part of the Salvation Army, I removed all references to calendar events from the army. Whether they are occurring or not, I do not know. I was just told to remove all references to the Salvation Army from my website. And I did. Hope that explains it!

Lee - Your "cancellation" justification below is very deceptive. I am an "owner/moderator" of another group in groups.io. You could have simply "deleted" the events from the calendar without notifying members of this group that the events were "Cancelled". There is certainly a difference between deleting references (as you were supposedly requested to do) and intentionally alerting/deceiving folks of regional SATERN net cancellations for those nets for which you were NOT the net manager.

You are correct in that it could be seen as deceptive. It was not intended to be as such. I was told that the 40m S. Territory net was no longer active, nor was the 20m Digital Net, and that the Net Controller for the Central Territory Net had resigned and the net was no longer running. Other than those 3, can you remind me what other nets I deleted? I did not realize at the time it would send notices to everyone, and for that I apologize. I hate spam mail, myself.

Noel, I honestly don’t get it. All I have done is created a new net with a large group of other hams after the net we do 6 days per week was basically abandoned by TSA, with no leadership or anyone to run it. NOPLACE have I stated that ANYONE should not support TSA; in fact I have made it clear numerous times, in numerous statements, that I wholly endorse TSA and the Volunteers that support it. What, exactly, would you suggest I do? Walk away from the net that I have run and attended 6 days per week, 2 hours+ per day, for almost 1.5 years? A net which, incidentally, you have not even been a part of, according to the database..
As this whole thing crumbled within the course of 3 weeks, with no warning, I am trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Who, exactly, am I hurting?

Lee, First, you are hurting no one. These folks who are upset don't have any idea why you did what you did. Any time there is a change in routine, there will always be people who don't like it, and will make their feelings known. My advice is ignore them and carry on doing what you do best: keeping the net going to assist those in need in times of disaster. They will eventually move on. As thankless a job as it is, please know that there are many of us who appreciate your efforts and want to see the net continue with or without the support of TSA. I'm just sorry that these unkind comments fall on you. As the Brits are known to say, "KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!" Lee,
If you were to compare this thread and situation as a whole to a product for sale on Amazon you'd find the 1* reviews to be 1 or 2%. While not easy sometimes, ignore the naysayers and move on. I am a relatively new ham and don't get on the air as much as I'd like to but I enjoy being a member of the group. I stumbled upon the net last summer while on vacation in the New Mex mountains. Not much of an antenna in my Texas HOA so I seldom can even hear the net. Yet I enjoy it and fully support the mission and intent thereof. Sit back, take a breadth, but don't quit. 73's Dennis KJ5DJS |

As busy as you've been I'm not surprised that you don't remember me even though I've consulted you directly about the digital net. I started copying that, and also started participating in a local SATERN net, last year after meeting with Salvation Army people local to my area. My purpose in joining was to be better prepared through networking, since Salvation Army and Red Cross both work to serve in disaster response. Please forgive me if I'm to dense to follow your logic, but if the nets are no longer SATERN nets, I see no point in continuing my involvement. The same pattern appears to exist here as did when hams in my area were informed that "RACES is going away" in 2018 after the local EOC removed all ham equipment and informed the ham community that the gear "is being stored at an undisclosed location. We were informed that cell phones made us superfluous. At that time the entire county RACES team resigned. I won't bother you further, as I'm deleting myself from this account. I simply don't need just another purely Amateur Radio activity. 73, --Noel N9CJT |

It seems we now have two organizations "competing" under the name SATERN. I prefer to keep my association with the Salvation Army.

Greg, I disagree, there is only one SATERN organization and it is not affiliated with the Salvation Army. Had the Salvation Army seen value in SATERN as it was previously organized they would have done something to protect that organization. However, they didn't but rather have the best of two worlds, they are officially detached from an organization they could not manage and knew nothing about, besides the politics of power, and they still have a reliable network of radio amateurs to call on if and when needed and they decide to utilize them. To date I have not seen anything from the Army about their plans to launch their own group of amateurs, though I readily admit I am not intimately connected with them as you and Noel seem to be. Don't get me wrong, the Salvation Army does a lot of good things and a lot of good programs, amateur radio just isn't one of them. I hate to see anyone leave the group, but Godspeed to you, Noel, and anyone else who chooses to leave SATERN. Sep 11, 2001 · The purpose of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) is to acquire and train personnel skilled in emergency communications and message handling, who will support Salvation Army operations in local, regional and International disaster situations. HOPE IS ON THE WAY! satern.org
The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) includes a worldwide network of volunteer amateur radio operators and other communications specialists, who may be mobilized to transmit emergency information during a disaster event. disaster.salvationarmyusa.org
SATERN’s 30 Year History It’s amazing to think that ham radio operators have had such a remarkable impact on the world thanks to SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network). The lives saved, families reunited and vital information relayed by this international fellowship of amateurs are beyond measure. MUST ONE GO ON? Do we need Bible verses to justify our efforts? My goal is to serve the community wherever God has placed me. With twelve years as an "active" SATERN newsletter editor (in KS & MO), SATERN mobile volunteer serving in six states (as best I can remember) no one asked my name, yet my purpose was and is clear, "To serve those in need." From tornado relief, floods, Mexican border relief, feeding the hungry, National Guard support, and prayer our communication skills are our gift from the God I serve. As Forest Gump said, "And that's all I got to say about that." God Bless and Keep you, Mike Asselta |
